Training International Technical Rescue Association (ITRA) rope rescue

Students obtain the ITRA rope rescue certificate after successfully completing the level 1, 2 or 3 training.

The training consists of 5 days of intensive training per level by experienced instructors.

ITRA level 1: learn the basic rope rescue techniques. We take you into the world of rope rescue from the basics to operational 'rescue technician L1'. After this, you can function in a team led by a team leader (TL) who directs you in exercises and operations. This training requires no prior knowledge and all competencies will be reviewed and practiced during the course. We strive to achieve a basic level, after which you can take an independent 'assessment' or competitive exam that tests your competencies against an international benchmark. You can be deployed as a first victim contact ('contact victime') and as a member of a team of rescuers.

The following techniques and competencies are trained during the course:

  • Knots
  • Equipment & PPE for rescues and how to use it
  • Simple hoist systems
  • Communication and 'Command & Control (C2)'
  • Anchors
  • Individual movements on rope (ascent, descent, conversion, self-rescue...)
  • Stretchering
  • 'Low angle rescue' - rescue from ravine

ITRA level 2: here we continue where we left off at level 1. We train you to work as an operator in complex rescues and in more challenging environments. Here too, we work together towards an independent 'assessment' or competitive exam that tests your competencies against an international standard. The focus of this training is mainly on being completely independent on ropes. In addition, a lot of attention is also paid to hoists and brake stations with all the related adaptations. Knot crossings in descents and ascents, conversions, different types of anchors... You can be deployed as a responsible rigger for anchors and moving ropes in a rescue team under the command of a team leader (TL).

The following techniques and competencies are trained during the course:

  • Knot crossing in hoist systems and braking stations.
  • Complex hoist systems
  • Emergency harnesses
  • Border crossing with stretcher
  • AHD - 'Artificial High Directionals': tripods, 2-legs/A-frame, 1-leg/ginpole...
  • Pick-off rescue
  • Different types of anchors: deadman anchor, ground anchors, vehicle anchor

ITRA level 3: this is the perfection of your skills as a rescuer. In this course we bring together all previously learned competencies in very complex setups and rescue operations. We teach you all the techniques and competencies to function as an independent member within a rescue team in all positions under the command of a team leader (TL). This is an expert level course. We provide you with a lot of knowledge about the most challenging rescues in a short time. A real must for the passionate rescue professional.

The following techniques and competencies are trained during the course:

  • Operations in poor visibility (night, underground, confined space...)
  • Masts, towers and tree climbing
  • Highlines and Tyroliennes
  • Reeves and PRMs
  • Specialist movements on rope (re-anchor, umbrella, rope change...)
